Where to next: Myanmar

I'm in-between travel destinations at the moment, so naturally, I'm considering going everywhere!

Top of the list at the moment is Myanmar, previously known a Burma. As strange as it sounds, Myanmar was the very first country I had a deep desire to travel to. I learned about the civil unrest back in primary school, and something drew me in. I'm not sure whether it was the fact that back in the late 90s, early 2000s, Myanmar wasn't welcoming to tourists, and therefore seemed so forbidden it was inviting. Or whether my childhood desire to help underdeveloped communities build a functioning community together was tickled. Whatever it was, I was hooked. I remember going home from school one day, and announcing to dad I'm going to visit Myanmar one day, and that was that.

Today Myanmar (somewhat) welcomes tourists with open arms. It's said to be one of the safest countries in the world to travel, rarely will you be robbed, harmed or ripped-off (unless you exchange money illegally). In fact, as a solo female traveller it's said you'll attract many friendly citizens who don't understand why you would travel alone, taking it upon themselves to show you around expecting nothing in return.

But for all these reasons and many more, Myanmar is fast becoming more ridden with tourists each year, spoiling my dream of having untouched Myanmar to myself.

My Myanmar Checklist –

1. Get amongst the hustle and bustle of Yangon 2. Watch the sun rise over thousands of temples in Bagan 3. Cruise the Ayeyarwaddy river on my way to Mandalay 4. Hike the mountainous landscape of Kalaw 5. People watching on Inle Lake 6. Hike Bago to see Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (and not die of exhaustion)

So the question stands, shall Myanmar be the next plane ticket I purchase? Only time will tell. To be honest, I'm waiting for a sign to make the decision.

Tell me, where have you always wanted to explore? And how do you decide on destinations?
