How to Achieve a Work-Life Balance

You may have noticed things have slowed down here lately. And for that, I apologise. I hate it when my blog gets put on the back burner, but sometimes life just gets in the way.

Y'see, I've started working full-time. I was offered one of those 'too-good-to-be-true' opportunities and now I'm working 40+ hours a week on top of my freelance work. There just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day (damn you sleep!). But, I've managed to get on top of everything and free up time to write for myself again. So, I'm back dearest readers... I hope.

When freelancing, I was considering my work-life balance. I felt as though I was always in work mode because I worked from home. I just couldn't switch off. I'd get so used to being home I wouldn't really want to leave, stuck in a rut of comfy pants and my own company. I really had to push myself to actually have a life outside of my little apartment. Not earning much didn't help the situation either.

But now that I'm working more hours every week from an office in the city, there's been a massive shift. And I feel like I don't have any time to myself anymore.

I got to thinking how to achieve a work-life balance now that I'm so busy with my workload. I've found some tips to learn by that could also help you in all the chaos that is life.

Be organised

Now first things first, if you're going to make a change, you need to be organised. Whatever your system is to book in time, whether it's a written diary or your phone calendar, incorporate these tips into your schedule.

Find time for you

Schedule some guilt-free you time every week. Hell, write it in your calendar if you have to! This time can be for anything that makes you feel refreshed and happy. Maybe it's having an electronic-free dinner with your loved ones, watching a movie in the bath or sleeping-in till noon.

Let go of perfectionism

I'm sure there are a lot of you out there that need to get the job done right. Although I'm not that kind of person - often I just like getting the job done so I can move onto the next one - this tip goes out to you 'do it right or don't do it at all' kind of people out there. They say it's a healthier option to drive for excellence, not perfection. So if you're a perfectionist, try letting go for a while and see where it takes you.

Unplug

Never before have we been so connected in so many ways all at once. It's pretty crazy how wired all really are. What's worse, we can't just leave work at work anymore. We take it home with us in our pockets on our phones. One way to get unplugged is to either remove your work email account off your phone or stop receiving notifications. Now, I'm very rarely offline. No matter where I am I have my phone on me. And if I forget my phone, I actually get a little anxious – it's nuts. So getting unplugged is definitely something I'd like to practice.

Exercise

Another point I'm terrible at. But I totally understand how good exercise is for your body both mentally and physically. Exercise helps reduce stress, release happy endorphins, gets your mind in a somewhat meditative state and overall, it makes you feel great! There are absolutely no reasons why you shouldn't take some time for your mind, body and sanity for a bit of exercise each week. Get your blood pumping!

Treat yo' self

Give yourself little incentives for when you're doing well. Take yourself out for dinner, buy yourself that jacket you've been eying off for 3 winters now or take a sick day. Care less about those around you and just do what you gotta do.

Set your own rules

Let's face it, we're all very different. Set your own rules to create your work life balance. Evaluate what you need to make time for yourself, what's taking up all of your time and how you can prioritise better. Remember, don't be afraid to say 'no'. It's a powerful skill to have, use it and use it well.

Make it happen – don't bail on your work-life balance

We've all been there before. Diets, exercise regimes, new years resolutions – so many empty promises to ourselves. They say to make a change in your life you need to stick to something for 21 days. Start out small, build on it, and take control of your personal life again.
